Excuses, nothing else, and the most curious thing is that they are often the same, whether you want to start playing or want to take the instrument back and progress in the studio.
Not only I say it, says Russ Miller, one who for instance has played with the likes of Ray Charles, Cher, Natalie Cole, Tina Turner, Bocelli, Al Jarreau, and many others. One who lives on music and lives in contact with many drummers.
I have extrapolated some of his advice from an old interview and I propose it to you again with my own considerations and experiences, because after all the problems are always the same and often different solutions and points of view can give us a hand.
1) I SHOULD HAVE STARTED WHEN I WAS YOUNGER
This is one of the main excuses for not learning to play. Many also use it to justify the fact that they played the drums a few years ago, but that they have now stopped for a while and are unable to start again.
What a drummer of a very young age needs to know is that there is a huge amount of time wasted when studying drums at a very young age.
Think of the lack of a precise goal, the lack of scrupulousness and organization that exists in a boy who is not even of age. Often they are things compensated by the enormous amount of time available, but in reality all this time they waste a lot.
In adulthood, it assimilates less but it can progress more
You can actually progress much more tangibly in adulthood than adolescence, with a solid organization of time, exercises to do and with much more concentration.
2) I DON’T HAVE A PLACE TO PRACTICE
This is a real problem. It touches me deeply, I too ruined my guts to think how to do it so I could exercise every day even though I lived in an apartment.
OFTEN YOU HAVE TO CONCERN
Let’s start by making it clear that the battery you are practicing does not have to be your ideal battery.
It is important to focus on it.
You don’t need two boxes, three toms, two gables, and a dozen plates. You don’t need Canadian maple and you don’t need connected microphones and video cameras. If the goal is to study, today technology meets us with innovative solutions.
There are super silent mesh skins to replace your skins, there are electronic drum kits of all price ranges and features, there are drum sets for practice and silent batteries.
We can open a very long talk about realism and the pleasure of playing one or the other solution, but remember that your goal now is to study, and all these solutions allow you to do it daily.
