I will not face the self-made / school diatribe today, but it may not be an idea for a future post. Today I will talk as the title of those who started playing drums, they are full of energy, they are progressing well and with some good practice, they could really make an important qualitative leap.
1. DON’T ALWAYS PLAY ALONE
Obviously, in the beginning, it is not easy to compare oneself with other musicians, especially if they are more experienced, and at the beginning, it is important to play alone and learn the basics, but sharing music with them will be a completely different experience. Other sensations, other sounds, (another volume!), And above all real people who can give you real feedback. Advice, criticism, but also a lot of energy, congratulations, in short, being part of a brand is a fantastic thing. The first song made entirely is a fantastic sensation, not to mention the excitement of the first concerts, even with a small and familiar audience. Beautiful memories and an incredible gym.
2. PLAY WITH THE METRONOME
Ahi ahi … painful but necessary note.
A free app downloaded on the phone is fine, but knowing how to play following the metronome is absolutely necessary for all drummers. Whether you want to get there in a while and not immediately, it can also be there, but beware of all those who tell you that the metronome is not needed.
Obviously there are lots of drummers, even famous ones, who have never used it, but this is not an excuse for not learning how to do it. You will need it, I guarantee you, you cannot escape. Today the music is full of electronics, and you can meet loops, bases, play over a play-along (songs without drums), play with a band that uses the metronome, in the recording studio, etc.
For all these reasons and many others that I have not written, even the simplest times, the passages, the rudiments with the metronome begin to play. Today there are also metronomes with particular “counters” with which it is even fun to improvise one.
Technology advances and provides us with tools to improve our performance. Use them.
